PUBLIC SPACE AND GRAPHICS: NATIONAL MUSUEM OF NATURAL HISTORY, SMITHSONIAN Size: 12000 sq.ft. Completed: 1997 The scope of this project required the renovation of a large changing exhibition area into two shops and a public lobby. The design includes the restoration of a central area to its original ceiling height. A system of storefronts and canopies creates a secure, yet inviting enclosure for the retail areas, while allowing a clear view of historic architectural features. The entrances to the shops are defined by two large curving friezes. Graphic murals and specially displayed objects from the Museum’s collections help set the character for the shop interiors. back |
