BOOKSTORE: NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART Client: Smithsonian Size: 1800 sq.ft. Completed: 1991 The bookstore included the expansion and complete redesign of a small museum bookstore in the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. The principal feature of the design is the creation of a curving wall of niches and a frieze decorated with artists’ quotes on the subject of art. The casework, including the facing of the niche wall and frieze, was designed as “furniture” to create a clear distinction between store elements and the elegantly simple character of this historic building. back |
